SKILLMAN, N.J. – Three University of South Carolina Aiken
men's tennis players were chosen to the 2009 NCAA Division II
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-America
team it was announced by the ITA on Monday, June 8.
Bruno Seves (Araraquara, Brazil) was tabbed to the team as a
singles player, while Dagoberto Darezzo (San Carlos, Brazil) and
Edward Horne (Kent, England) were selected to the team as a doubles
tandem.
Three of a record 12 Peach Belt Conference players selected to the
2009 ITA Division II All-America team, the trio had to finish in
the top 20 in the final ITA rankings in singles or in the top 10 of
the final ITA rankings in doubles to be picked as an
All-American.
Seves, who was also recently named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA
Academic All-District 3 2008-09 Men's At-Large College
Division Team, graduated from USC Aiken with a degree in Business
Administration in May.
The USC Aiken athletic department Male Scholar-Athlete of the
Year, Seves compiled a 16-4 record in singles in 2009.
All of Seves' matches were at No. 1 singles.
A 2009 All-Peach Belt Conference first team selection, Seves
finished the 2009 PBC campaign at 6-2 in league action.
The Feb. 24 PBC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, Seves
concluded the year ranked sixth in singles nationally and 22nd in
the nation in doubles. He ends his playing career at USC Aiken with
a record of 50-9 in singles matches.
Horne won the ITA NCAA Division II Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award
for the Southeast Region in the middle of May.
Playing mainly at No. 3 singles in 2009, Horne compiled a 14-5
record in singles in 2009, including a 13-5 record at No. 3
singles. Horne was 1-0 at No. 1 singles.
The Kent, England native ends his Pacer career with a record of
50-30 in singles.
Horne was one-half of a top 10 team in doubles all of 2009 as he
and partner Darezzo finished the year 15-4. The Pacers'
tandem at No. 1 doubles all of 2009, Horne and Darezzo concluded
the Peach Belt Conference regular season with a 5-1 league mark.
The duo was a second team All-PBC selection in the spring of
2009.
Horne and Darezzo end the 2009 campaign ranked ninth in NCAA
Division II.
Darezzo was also 16-5 at No. 2 singles and was named second-team
All-Conference in both singles and doubles.
In the final ITA NCAA Division II men's tennis rankings of
2009, USC Aiken's men's tennis team concluded the 2009
season still ranked a program-best fifth.
The Pacers had moved into the fifth position just prior to
opening play in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in
Savannah, Ga.
The Pacers' appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament
marked the program's eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. USC
Aiken, who received a bye into the semifinal round of the Savannah
regional of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament,
defeated No. 18 Francis Marion to advance to the regional final
against No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic.
The Pirates were able to claim the regional title, but the
Pacers still concluded the year 19-5 overall. AASU went on to win
its second straight national crown a couple weeks later.
The Pacers as a team won 13 of their final 15 matches in 2009.
USC Aiken is the second of two Peach Belt Conference teams ranked
in the top five in the final regular season rankings of the 2009
season with national champion Armstrong Atlantic State No. 1.
In total, three PBC schools are in the top 10 with Georgia College
& State ranked seventh.
