AUGUSTA, Ga. – Four USC Aiken women's tennis
student-athletes were selected to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference
All-Academic Women's Tennis Team it was announced by the
league office on Thursday.
Brittany Gore (Columbia, S.C.) and Brittany Telford (Newmarket,
Canada) were first team picks, while Mathilde Grenet (Domont,
France) and Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England) were both
chosen to the second team.
Gore finished her 2009 spring campaign with a team second-best
10-6 record playing mostly at No. 5 or No. 6 singles for the
Pacers. Gore was 8-6 at No. 5 singles and 2-0 at No. 6 singles.
Gore concluded her year by winning five of her last eight
matches.
A junior Elementary Education major, Gore currently owns a 3.96
Grade Point Average.
Telford was third on the squad with 11 wins in the 2009 spring
campaign. Overall, Telford was 11-9.
Telford played at No. 4 singles all season and she earned a
victory in six of her last eight singles matches. In doubles,
Telford teamed with Grenet to go 11-10 on the year. The tandem was
9-9 at No. 1 doubles and 2-1 at No. 2 doubles.
A junior, Telford, who is 34-22 in her three years with the
program, currently owns a 3.87 GPA as a Biology major.
Grenet finished the 2009 spring season for USC Aiken with a 12-8
record in singles. She was 12-7 on the year at No. 2 singles. She
finished the year by claiming a victory in her last five singles
matches.
A junior Business Administration major, Grenet presently owns a
3.56 GPA.
USC Aiken's normal player at No. 1 singles in 2009, Humphrey
finished the 2009 spring campaign with a 9-11 record, which
included a 9-10 mark at No. 1 singles. Humphrey finished the year
strong in singles, claiming a victory in five of her last eight
singles matches.
In doubles, Humphrey teamed with Maria Soledad Angel (Rosario,
Argentina) to end the year 13-8 as a tandem. The duo was 11-7 at
No. 2 doubles.
The 2009 Pacer women overall concluded the year 12-10. USC Aiken
as a team won nine of its last 12 matches.
The PBC All-Academic Women's Tennis Team is part of a new
season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of
PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must
1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and
be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.20
cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at
least one full academic year at his or her current institution.
The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and
select the teams.
Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 26 NCAA
Division II National Championships. The league currently features
11 member institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina and
Georgia that compete in 12 championship sports. The 2008-09 members
are Augusta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University,
Clayton State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion
University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia
Southwestern State University, Lander University, North Georgia
College & State University, University of North Carolina at
Pembroke and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
