AUGUSTA,
Ga. - USC Aiken had three student-athletes chosen to the 2009 Peach
Belt Conference All-Academic Baseball Team it was announced by the
league office late Sunday evening.
USC Aiken's John Sherrer (LaGrange, Ga./LaGrange) was selected
to the first team, while Jason Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert)
and Chris Grandinetti (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) were tabbed to
the second team.
Sherrer, who was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic
All-District 3 Baseball College Division Team earlier this week,
just recently graduated from USC Aiken with a degree in Business
Administration. He finished his time in the classroom at USC Aiken
with a 3.586 grade point average.
The primary catcher for the nationally ranked Pacers in 2009,
Sherrer ended his final season in a Pacer uniform with a .357
batting average. He collected 55 hits in total for the Pacers in
2009.
The LaGrange, Ga. native finished the year with 13 extra-base
hits, which included 10 doubles. He also obtained a triple and two
home runs. In total, Sherrer acquired 43 runs and 31 RBIs.
In the field, Sherrer had 287 putouts.
A sophomore Business Administration major, Cochcroft currently
owns a 3.46 GPA.
A weekend starter for USC Aiken, Cochcroft finished the 2009
campaign for the Pacers with a team-high tying seven wins on the
hill. He was 7-3 overall on the year from the mound.
In 14 appearances, including 13 starts, Cochcroft struck out 34
batters. He pitched in a team-best 84.0 innings.
In an injury plagued sophomore campaign, Grandinetti played in
38 games for the Pacers in 2009. He started all 38 games in which
he appeared.
In the 38 contests, Grandinetti hit .328. Grandinetti had 14
extra-base knocks en route to 19 total RBIs.
In the classroom, Grandinetti carries a 3.64 GPA. He has yet to
choose a major.
The All-PBC Academic baseball team is part of a new season-long
program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC
student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be
eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1)
participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either
a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.20 cumulative
grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one
full academic year at his or her current institution. The Peach
Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee and select the
teams.
Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 26 NCAA
Division II National Championships. The conference features 11
member institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia
that compete in 12 championship sports. The 2008-09 members of the
PBC are Augusta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State
University, Clayton State University, Columbus State University,
Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University,
Georgia Southwestern State University, Lander University, North
Georgia College & State University, University of North
Carolina at Pembroke and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
The 2009 Peach Belt Conference regular season champions, USC
Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth
consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional. The Pacers' 42 wins
in 2009 leave the program entering the 2010 campaign with five
consecutive 40-win seasons.
