AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer
player Scott Newby was selected as the USC Aiken Athletic
Department Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, November 2.
Newby (Leicestershire, UK/Wreake Valley) helped lead USC Aiken
to a perfect 2-0 record last week by recording a team-high five
total points on the week.
Newby came off the bench in both of USC Aiken's wins last week.
He opened his week by scoring two goals in USC Aiken's 4-0
non-conference victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in
Laurinburg, N.C.
Newby put the Pacers on the board first in the St. Andrews match
with 11 seconds left to play in the first stanza. Senior James
Chidsey (Rome, Ga./Rome) made a crossing pass from the right corner
that was headed in by Newby.
Newby (Leicestershire, England) tallied his second goal of the
game and third of the year and of the match in the 68th minute.
Sophomore Isaiah Cohn (McDonough, Ga./Luella) took a corner kick
that was deflected by sophomore Amr Hailat (Aiken, S.C./South
Aiken) at the top of the box over to Newby at the far post, who
found the back of the net with his close range shot.
In USC Aiken's regular season finale, Newby assisted on the
match-winning goal in the Pacers' 3-2 win over
13th-ranked Anderson. Kennis Paul (Guoyave, Grenada/T.A.
Marryshaw College) scored the match-winner for the Pacers. It was
his first goal of the year.
Newby and the Pacers concluded the 2009 regular season with
three consecutive wins. USC Aiken with the win over
nationally-ranked Anderson finished the 2009 regular season with a
7-10-1 record. The Pacers were 2-6 in the PBC during the regular
season.
The seventh-seeded Pacers will travel to Greenwood, S.C. to take
