AIKEN, S.C. - For the second consecutive match the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team put together a tremendous second half to push one of the top teams in the Peach Belt Conference to the limit, but once again their efforts would fall just shy as Flagler earned a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Pacers at the "Pacer Pit."
Flagler held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but two goals in the second half forced the match into overtime.
Down 1-0 to the Saints, USC Aiken's Annie Whitley (Neptune Beach, Fla./Duncan V. Fletcher) secured her first goal of the year when she opportunistically plucked a loose ball in the box and put it into the right corner of the goal for a 1-1 tie at the 67:02 mark.
Loren Cate put the Saints ahead 2-1 quickly thereafter when she scored on a cross from Holly Payne.
The Saints seemingly heading towards victory in regulation, USC Aiken was able to get an equalizer at the 86:01 mark when Katie Rumble (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) put in an open ball just off the goal line after a cross from Jennifer Goodwin (Walterboro, S.C./Colleton County).
The Pacers would keep pressing for the game-winner, but neither team would be able to go ahead in regulation.
The first 10-minute overtime period ended rather uneventfully, but in the second overtime stanza Flagler's Lindsay Zullo collected the game-winning goal on a strike from 30 yards out.
Flagler outshot the pesky Pacers 28-15 in the match. The Saints held a slight 7-5 corner kick advantage.
The loss to the Saints dropped the Pacers to 2-7 on the year. They are now 0-4 in PBC tilts. Flagler is now 6-3-1 on the 2009 season, including 3-0-1 in the PBC.
The Pacers will next try and snap their four-match losing streak in a contest with league rival UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The match is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. Â Â
