AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team snapped a seven-match losing streak and picked up its first Peach Belt Conference victory of the 2009 season with a 2-0 victory over Clayton State on Saturday afternoon at the "Pacer Pit."
USC Aiken has now beaten the Lakers in the past two seasons with Saturday's victory over Clayton State improving USC Aiken to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in the PBC. Clayton State is now 3-9-1 (2-5-1 PBC).
Nicole Westphal (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) picked up her first clean sheet of the 2009 season in the shutout win over the Lakers. Westphal made two saves to pick up the shutout.
Jenny Pineiro (Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) first placed the Pacers on the scoreboard in the 25th-minute when she used a beautiful cross from Annie Whitley (Neptune Beach, Fla./Duncan V. Fletcher) to place the Pacers on top, 1-0. Pineiro deftly hit the cross on a one-timer to give the Pacers the early advantage.
The Pacers would put the game out of reach in the 58th-minute when Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C./Summerville) hit a left-footed shot from 20 yards out that sailed past Clayton State goalkeeper Dominique Trappio for a 2-0 Pacer lead.
The Pacer defense and Westphal would hold strong from there to preserve the third win of the year for a feisty Pacer squad.
USC Aiken finished with five more shots than the Lakers in the match, taking 18 shots compared to Clayton State's 13. USC Aiken also held the advantage in corner kicks at 4-2.
USC Aiken has three matches in the upcoming week, beginning with a 6 p.m. match against Erskine in Due West, S.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Two days later, USC Aiken will welcome Converse to the "Pacer Pit" for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday, Oct. 22.
USC Aiken will close out the week by playing the first match of a men's and women's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern at the "Pacer Pit" on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. It will be senior day at the "Pacer Pit."
