GREENWOOD, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team dropped another Peach Belt Conference heartbreaker on Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to league foe and regionally-ranked Lander.
USC Aiken has now lost seven straight, but the Pacers recent skid is a little misleading because five of USC Aiken's total of eight one-goal losses have come in the stretch. The Pacers have been in almost every match that they have played with two of the eight one-goal losses coming in overtime in the last two weeks.
USC Aiken is still searching for its first PBC victory on the year, falling to 2-10 overall and 0-7 in the conference with the loss to the Bearcats on Thursday. Lander improves to 8-1-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the PBC with its victory over the Pacers.
Lander scored the only goal of the match on a 30-yard shot from Kendall Couch in the 34th-minute. The goal was the second of the 2009 campaign for Couch.
USC Aiken acquired a chance for the equalizer in the 50th-minute when Maria Frontroth (Buenos Aires, Argentina/BBS) went one-on-one with Lander goalkeeper Rachel Baggett and sent the shot just to the right of the net.
Lander finished the match with four more shots than the Pacers at 11-7. The Bearcats also held the edge in corner kicks in the match at 5-3.
The USC Aiken women's soccer team will next take the pitch for a 1 p.m. match against Peach Belt Conference rival Clayton State on Saturday, Oct. 17 in Aiken, S.C. The match is the first match of a men's and women's soccer PBC doubleheader at the "Pacer Pit" with the Pacer men slated to square off against the Laker men immediately following the women's match at approximately 3:30 p.m.
