Box Score WINGATE, N.C.-- In a matchup of two of the hottest teams in the country, Wingate (25-1) held USC Aiken (18-4) to a season-low .010 hitting percentage and beat the Lady Pacers in dominating fashion Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena, getting revenge for their only loss of the season 30-23, 30-20, 30-17. The loss snaps a 14-game winning streak for USC Aiken, who last lost to Catawba back on September 1. The contest also marked the first time the Lady Pacers had been swept this season. The Lady Pacers hosted Wingate on September 8 in the USC Aiken Invitational and pulled out a 25-30, 30-21, 30-13, 25-30, 15-9 victory. Wingate, ranked fourth in the South Region, has since rattled off 16-straight victories.
In the opening game, USCA jumped ahead early and led 7-2 when
Stefanie Durham notched a kill for the squad's fifth-straight point. Wingate bounced back and the teams went back and forth. After a Durham ace made the score 21-20 Bulldogs, Wingate closed the game on a 9-3 run.
The hosts broke open the second game six-straight points early to take a 13-5 lead and never looked back. The Bulldogs led by as many as 12 at 21-9 in the game. The Lady Pacers had just seven kills compared to 11 errors in game two for a -.121 hitting percentage. Wingate meanwhiled recorded their best attacking game of the night, tallying 16 kills to only four errors for a .387 hitting percentage.
The Bulldogs erased any hope for a comeback in game three, jumping out to a 4-1 lead before steadily increasing the advantage throughout the game en route to the dominating 30-17 win.
For the match, USCA's season-low hitting percentage was .138 below their previous low and .274 below Wingate's hitting percentage. Senior
Amanda Timm and Durham led the Lady Pacers with seven kills apiece, but they were also charged with seven errors each for a .000 hitting percentage. Senior
Mandy Gerolstein added five kills to only one error for a team-high .235 hitting percentage.
Wingate freshman Stormy Gale had a terrific match for the hosts, tallying 15 kills to just three errors for a .429 hitting percentage and adding five blocks for a game-high 18.5 points. Rachelle Rostas and Rebecca Bloemer each posted eight kills in the contest.
USC Aiken will return home on Tuesday, October 23, to face Newberry at 7:00 PM. The Lady Pacers, 4-0 on their home floor, have completed their road slate and finish the season with six straight games at the USCA Convocation Center.
