Box Score AIKEN, SC--Francis Marion's Ben Chavolla scored twice to help the 18th ranked Patriots survive a major scare, holding off USC Aiken's upset bid with a 2-1 overtime victory in men's soccer action. It was the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams. FMU (5-1-0, 1-0-0 PBC) improves to 8-6-2 all-time versus the Pacers (0-4-0, 0-1-0 PBC).
Chavolla netted his first tally in the 13th minute from 12 yards out, beating goalkeeper
Peter Calabrese from straight on off a Henry Theiling cross. It was Chavolla's seventh marker of the season.
USCA struck back quickly, however, when
Jean-Pascal Bozso lofted a shot over goalkeeper Jonathan Runion's head in the 18th minute from 30 yards out to knot the match up at 1-1. Bozso, ironically a goalkeeper for his first three seasons at USCA, gave the Pacers their first goal of the season snapping a 287-minute scoring drought.
Despite out shooting the Pacers 9-2 in the second half, the Patriots were unable to beat Calabrese. On the afternoon, he recorded eight saves in 98:25 of action. Runion registered two saves for FMU.
With time winding down in the first overtime period, Chavolla slipped through the defense, took the Peter Nsubuga feed and put it past Calabrese for the game winner with 1:35 on the clock.
For the match, USCA was whistled for 22 fouls and three yellow cards. FMU committed 12 fouls and did not receive any cards. FMU also held an edge in corner kicks at 8-4.
USCA travels to Atlanta, GA to face Division I opponent Georgia State on Monday, September 22 at 7:00 PM. FMU returns home to Florence, SC to host PBC foe UNC Pembroke on Tuesday, September 23 at 4:00 PM.
