Box Score AIKEN, SC--Newberry College (10-13) shocked USC Aiken (8-14) with the program's first ever win over the Lady Pacers, 3-0 on Wednesday night at "The Courthouse" in Aiken in non-conference volleyball action. Game scores were 30-18, 33-31, and 33-31.
In game one, Newberry jumped out to the early 3-1 lead before the Lady Pacers rallied back to tie it up at 7-7. The Lady Indians, however, quickly regained command by winning 10 of the next 14 points forcing USCA head coach Will Condon to take a timeout to settle down his team. A kill by Kristin Pulone followed up by an ace off the service of Amanda Van Pelt, however, expanded the lead to 19-11. USCA could not get closer than eight points the rest of the way, falling 30-18.Â
Pulone had a team-high 10 kills, hitting .400 for the match, and tied Van Pelt for team-high honors in aces with three. As a team, Newberry totaled eight aces to five service errors. USCA managed seven aces, but were plagued throughout the match by 15 serving errors.Â
Game two and three would prove to be extremely competitive. Game two witnessed 14 ties. The Lady Pacers had the early lead until one of Layne Williams' seven kills gave Newberry its first lead at 14-13. From 20-20 on, neither team held more than a one-point lead until the final margin of 33-31. A Williams' solo block gave Newberry the game two win.Â
Game three was also neck-and-neck with 15 ties including five after the Lady Pacers rallied from a 23-18 deficit to knot the game up at 24-24. USCA had one chance at game point leading 31-30, but three straight tallies by the Lady Indians gave them their first win in 11 meetings with USCA.Â
Amy Long had 16 kills and two blocks to lead the Lady Pacers.
Jenny Lloyd, who leads the Peach Belt Conference in kills per game, added 15 kills and six digs.
Laura Williams chipped in nine kills as USCA hit .161 for the match. Freshman
Cheryl Barcas had 36 assists and a team-best three aces.Â
Jessica Lipsi had nine kills for Newberry while Aubrey Mosley added 28 assists and 14 digs. As a team, the Lady Indians hit .270.Â
USC Aiken will host the South Region Tournament this Friday and Saturday. Play begins on Friday at 12:00 PM when the Lady Pacers play Lynn University. Newberry's next match is October 22 when they host Columbia College at 6:30 PM.
