Macarin's Miracle Goal Stuns No. 9 Patriots

Box Score AIKEN, SC--USC Aiken freshman Jen Mascarin scored a breakaway goal with two seconds remaining to tie the match against ninth-ranked Francis Marion 1-1 and force overtime.  Five minutes into the extra period, Mascarin struck again, this time with the game winner.  With the 2-1 win, the Lady Pacers (7-4-3, 1-3-2 PBC) extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches (5-0-2), notched their first ever win over Francis Marion (11-4-0, 2-3-0 PBC), and the program's first ever win over a top 10 team.

Scoreless for over 85 minutes of the match, USCA was awarded a direct kick from 25 yards out with 4:48 to play.  Senior Kelley Shemansky launched a shot towards FMU goalkeeper Mandy Liles that hit the crossbar and deflected out of bounds.

Having seized some momentum from the dodged bullet, the Patriots controlled the action. Junior Katie Roberts slipped a pass past the USCA defense finding freshman Katie Riley for her 12th goal of the season at 86:46.

Electing to play aggressively over the waning moments, Francis Marion pushed for an insurance goal.  But with 10 seconds remaining,Shemansky intercepted a Patriot pass and kicked it ahead to a breaking Mascarin.  Fighting off one defender and one on one with the keeper, Mascarin fired a shot from just inside the top of the box and beat Liles to the left side for the dramatic game-tying goal with two seconds remaining.

In the overtime period, senior Stacey Courtwright crossed a pass into Mascarin who drilled home the game winner from 10 yards out at 94:57.  After missing much of preseason and the first six games of the regular season, the 5-4 freshman from Komoka, Ontario has tallied seven goals in eight games ranking second on the team in goals scored and points.

In net for the Lady Pacers, sophomore Shannon Hobbs faced 10 shots, making three saves and allowing the one goal.  For FMU, Liles notched two saves, allowing two goals on seven shots.
In the previous five meetings between these two schools, Francis Marion had outscored USCA 20-6.

USC Aiken, which remains unbeaten at home this season (4-0-2), will travel to Gaffney, SC on Saturday, October 26 to face Limestone College at 1:00 PM.  Francis Marion returns to Florence, SC for their home finale against Kennesaw State on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
