NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina at Aiken and Newberry College split in soccer action at Setzler Field, with the Pacers winning the men's match 6-2 and the Lady Indians winning the nightcap 5-2.
In the opening match of the doubleheader,
Brad Saenz scored a hat trick and added an assist in the Pacers win, but it was
Marlon Glean who started the scoring on a penalty kick in the 10
th minute.
Jonathan Collier of Newberry evened the score five minutes later, but Saenz then scored his first goal of the evening only 20 seconds later and that would be as close as the Indians would get.
Fabio Neves and
Bryan Bolen also added first period goals and the Pacers led 4-1 at the half.
Saenz scored two more goals in the second period and Luke Clonts added the second Newberry goal to close out the scoring.
The women's contest started much like the men's as a USCA player knocked in a penalty kick to open the scoring. Jacqueline Francois put the Lady Pacers up with the kick in the 23
rd minute of action.
The Indians then scored the next two goals as Michelle Baker scored both of them, once unassisted and one on an assist from Jami Schliesman. The visitors did manage to even the score with a little over a minute left before the half when
Christy Cousins headed in a corner kick from
Gretchen Honaker.
The second period was all Newberry as Mandi Cannon put the Indians up for good seven minutes into the second stanza. Schliesman and Tracy D'Allesandro each added second period goals for the final margin.
