Pacers Unable to Knock Off Nationally-Ranked Patriots

AIKEN, S.C. – The USC Aiken men's and women's tennis teams were unable to knock off nationally-ranked Francis Marion on Saturday at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.

In a battle of top 20 teams, 15th-ranked Francis Marion was narrowly able to escape the 17th-ranked Pacers in a 5-4 victory. The 13th-ranked Francis Marion women were able to best the Pacer women, 7-2.

The Pacer men are now 8-10 on the season. The loss to Peach Belt Conference rival Francis Marion on Saturday drops the Pacers to 2-7 in the PBC. The USC Aiken women fell to 9-10 on the season in their loss to Francis Marion on Saturday. The Pacer women are presently 4-8 in the PBC.

The 15th-ranked Francis Marion men are now 9-4 (5-3 PBC), while the 13th-ranked Francis Marion women move to 12-3 (8-2 PBC) with the victory over the Pacers on Saturday.

The 17th-ranked Pacer men commandeered two of the three doubles matches to hold a 2-1 lead after doubles, but Francis Marion countered by claiming four of the six singles matches to collect the narrow 5-4 victory.

USC Aiken's No. 1 doubles duo of Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Sergio D'Amorim) and Juan Xavier Ponce (Miami, Fla. /Drury University) continued their winning ways on Saturday by besting Francis Marion's No. 1 doubles team of Oshada Wijemanne and Dirk Moore by the score of 8-5. The Pacer tandem has now won 11 straight. They are 15-3 on the 2010 season.

USC Aiken dropped the match at No. 2 doubles, but USC Aiken's No. 3 doubles tandem of Ben Klass (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur) and Juan Guglielmeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Instituto Albert Einstein) defeated Francis Marion's Alex Caspari and Jack Bishop by an 8-6 tally.

Nicolas Markiewicz (Liege, Belgium/College Saint Louis Liege) claimed one of two USC Aiken's two singles points by easly besting Francis Marion's Dirk Blair 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Guglielmeti secured USC Aiken's final point of the day by downing Bishop 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 at No. 6 singles. The win was Guglielmeti's second straight. It moved him to 10-6 on the season. He is the second Pacer to acquire double-digit wins in 2010, joining Ponce, who is currently 11-6.

Ida Sandberg (Uppsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) secured the Pacer women's lone point in doubles by downing Francis Marion's No. 3 doubles duo of Kerry Hall and Karine Augur, 8-3. Gale defeated Augur 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for the Pacers lone singles point.

The USC Aiken men will next travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on the Limestone Saints on Wednesday, April 7. The match is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.

The USC Aiken men and women will then conclude the week by traveling to Charlotte, N.C. to play a neutral site match against Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 11.
