CHARLESTON, S.C. - Byron Faison scored a game-high 35 points,
but a Tony White, Jr. bank shot from just outside of the free throw
line with two seconds left in overtime gave the College of
Charleston a narrow 94-92 exhibition victory over USC Aiken.
USC Aiken's Re'mon Nelson (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal
Winchester ) had given the Pacers a chance for victory in overtime
by hitting a three-pointer from NBA range with six seconds left in
regulation. USC Aiken down 85-82, SoCon preseason Player of the
Year Andrew Goudelock gave life to the Pacers when he mishandled a
pass on the Cougar baseline. The Pacers took advantage with the
Nelson three-pointer. Goudelock then had a chance to win the game
in regulation, but his three-point attempt missed.
USC Aiken had an 88-87 lead in the overtime period on a Faison
three-pointer, but College of Charleston held a slight two-point
advantage at 92-90 with 58 seconds remaining. Faison (Sumter,
S.C./Crestwood) sunk two free throws to even the game with 31
seconds left. The Cougars held for the last shot and White took
full advantage of the situation by knocking down the bank shot with
two seconds left.
Faison was 13-for-25 overall in the contest, connecting on 50
percent of his shots from beyond the arc in the game where he was
7-for-14. He was a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe with the
two clutch free throws in overtime.
Nelson continued his efforts to try and pick up a triple-double
in the game by finishing the narrow loss to the Cougars with 23
points, nine rebounds and five assists. He also had three steals.
Michael Technow (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) was the final
Pacer in double digits in the game, finishing his night with 17
points on a 8-for-14 performance from the floor. The majority of
his points came in the paint where he also corralled eight boards.
Four Cougars finished in double figures with White leading the
way with 24 points. He was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity
stripe in the game.
Both teams shot well from the field in the contest. USC Aiken
shot 43 percent (37-for-86), while the Cougars connected on 54
percent (34-for-63) of their shots.
The game started with the Pacers clicking on all cylinders, but
the Cougars rebounded and eventually jumped out to a 15-point
advantage in the first stanza. The Pacers would not let that last
though, going on a late run in the first half to sit behind just
five at 43-38 at intermission.
The Pacers would start the second half strongly. In fact, USC
Aiken pulled ahead by three over the SoCon favorites in the
inaugural minutes of the second half.
The two teams would play close the rest of the game with
Nelson's three-pointer evening things at the end of regulation.
USC Aiken's regular season will commence 11 days from now at the
Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C. against NAIA powerhouse Life
University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The contest will
mark the first ever meeting between the two programs.
